Exploring the style of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

Making Of / 30 April 2025

As a long-time fan of the Scott Pilgrim comics and movie, I was ecstatic when they released a new installment in the Scott Pilgrim universe. The art style of the comics has always caught my eye, and seeing that the animation would adopt the style was exciting to see as a fan. I was eager to finally study the art style, using Chappell Roan as my subject to insert into the universe. I wanted to use someone that was recognizable even in the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off style, as well as someone I could easily imagine living in that world.

I began my process with studying existing characters, figuring out different body types, face shapes, and eye variations before I launched into working on my interpretation of Chappell Roan in the style.

The next important step for me was figuring out the outfit. Chappell Roan is known for her eccentric style, it was an interesting process to brainstorm wanting an outfit that felt like something she would wear, while still being aware of wanting the design to be animation friendly. I took inspiration from some of her performance outfits and meshed different elements together, until I found something I was happy with.

To understand the style, I studied an existing character before launching full force into creating a new character. I landed on studying Envy Adams, as her character was very similar to how I wanted to add Chappell Roan in, both in looks and personality. After referring back to existing character sheets for the character, I was able to successfully make my own turn around of the character. To make sure my Chappell Roan design did fit in with the style, I drew both together on the same plane, which also helped with understanding their height difference for when I would create a full illustration.

After I finally felt confident in my execution of the style, I finally launched into my Chappell Roan design, creating a turn around, hand studies, expressions, and gestures. While creating these, I was avidly rewatching the show for inspiration for different expressions and hands so that I knew they would fit with the other characters. When exploring gestures, I looked at performances at concerts and music festivals. Chappell Roan dances around whenever she is on a stage, so what better to reference than the pop star herself when looking for fun poses.

Once I truly felt comfortable with both the style and my design, I put it all together in a final illustration, studying not just the characters, but the environment that they live in. I used a 3D model as a reference for the background and implimented not just my Chappell Roan design, but other characters in the universe so that I could truly immerse her in the world. In a piece I call "An Offer She Can Refuse", I wanted to interpret a situation where Gideon would be proposing a deal to Chappell, with some of his allies watching as Chappell Roan denies his offer, making it clear how she feels about the situation.

All pre-existing Scott Pilgrim characters are not my design, Envy Adams, Roxie Richter, and Gideon Graves, as well as the style of the Scott Pilgrim comics and television show, were all created by Bryan Lee O'Malley.
